The Days of my Life

Thursday, August 20, 2009

Took a cab back home in the evening. The driver took an illegal left-turn at a traffic light as he had decided to turn towards me at the last minute. When I boarded the cab, he said,
'Did you see the stunt that I took?' with a pleased expression. 'They horn at me, but I don't care.'
I nodded and agreed that picking up a passenger was more important to him.

On the way, I asked him whether he had seen the ST article today about the taxi-driver who wrote taxidiary.blogspot.com . He said yes, and boasted that he too, can write and he had also many stories to tell. He was also cynical that a scientist with a Standford PHD could resort to driving a taxi and remarked that 'he must have some motive'. Then he went on to tell me a few of his own nightmare stories from taxi-driving.

Once, he had sent a lady in the morning to her destination. The fare was $8+ and she passed him a $10 note. When he gave her the change, she glared at him and said angrily that she had given him a $50 note. Despite him showing her his cash-box to prove his innocence, she was vehement in her accusation. Then he was afraid that she may shout molest or something, so he had no choice but to give her change of $40+. He concluded by saying 'What goes round, comes around', as she had left her iPhone behind in his taxi when she walked off. I did not ask what he did with that iPhone.

Stumbled upon taxidiary.blogspot.com and was hooked from the last entry to the first!

From now on, I will empathise with taxi-drivers more and tip them more generously rather than bitch about surcharges and rise in taxi fares.
